Sairaab, the latest offering from Star Plus, arrives with a heavy load of expectations, especially given the buzz and intrigue surrounding its concept following the promo launch. Produced by Magic Moments Motion Pictures, this show delves into yet another family-centred narrative, but with a twist—its focus on a complex love story. This time, the plot takes an adventurous turn by exploring the theme of second chances in romance. Ishaan, the male lead, is a celebrated pop singer, much younger than his love interest. On the other hand, Dr Noyonika is a seasoned surgeon and an empowered woman who has bravely navigated the betrayal of her husband, raising her daughter with both dignity and resilience.
The story unfolds across two vibrant cities: Kolkata, where Noyonika resides, and Mumbai, home to Ishaan. Ishaan has garnered a massive following, capturing the attention of the younger generation with his popular songs. His band, Sairaab, has made a name for itself and gained widespread recognition in the music scene.
Noyonika, despite being divorced, continues to live with her in-laws, while her husband has moved out to start a life with his new wife. The family dynamics are fraught with tension, as her mother-in-law often treats Noyonika harshly.
Noyonika’s life largely centres on her daughter, Ujjaini, affectionately known as Tinni. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Ujjaini is pursuing a career in medicine and has big dreams for her future. Ujjaini harbours a deep-seated disdain for her father and her stepmother, a feeling that will shape the unfolding narrative. The sequences of the mother and daughter, especially the ones where Tinni stands up for her mother, are effective.
Ishaan grapples with a troubled past, deeply entwined with his roots in Kolkata. Yet, he holds onto the city with a bittersweet sense, haunted by the painful memory of his mother’s abandonment.
The concept shines with a fresh perspective, thanks to its musical element. The promos featuring a young singer who falls for a significantly older woman have sparked considerable anticipation. It will be fascinating to see how this love story unfolds, particularly if it’s supported by a strong musical backdrop. Historically, well-crafted musicals have always attracted attention, and we expect Sairaab to make the most of this trend.
It’s still too early to make a definitive judgment on the pairing of Rohit Chandel and Madirakshi Mundle. Madirakshi exudes confidence, effortlessly embodying her character. However, she doesn’t quite appear to match the age of the role she’s playing. On the other hand, Rohit Chandel possesses a captivating charisma that suits a celebrity. It would be fantastic if he focused more on the nuances and subtleties needed to convincingly portray a singer.
The supporting cast is well-balanced with exceptional actors. Kishori Shahane, Sagar Saini, Ajoy Chakraborty, Tina Kashyap, Vijay Laxmi Singh, Patrali Chattopadhyay, Ruchi Savarn, Sachin Verma, Neha Kaul, Raj Logani, Shantanu Monga, Pawan Mahendru and others make for a good ensemble cast.
The first episode effectively introduces the worlds of Ishaan and Noyonika, showcasing Noyonika’s quiet strength and resilience. From the outset, Ishaan’s deep-seated issues are also laid bare. It will be fascinating to see how their love story unfolds, particularly as it navigates the complexities of age differences and societal judgments. The family dynamics seem to be quite predictable, as they cling to traditional and conservative stereotypes. Ishaan’s world shines with vibrant colours, while Noyonika’s scenes have a softer touch, underscoring her grounded demeanour.
Overall, Sairaab has certainly managed to capture attention right from the start. It feels like the perfect remedy needed to shake off the IPL hangover. The success now hinges on how seamlessly the story unfolds, delivering a mature love story while maintaining a strong musical focus.
We at IWMBuzz.com give 4 out of 5 stars to Sairaab.
