Eros International Media Limited (“Eros”), after filing an appeal with the Madras High Court, suffered a significant setback when the Court ordered that the production house’s planned film, Akhanda 2, be halted.
The issue has its roots in a previous arbitration decision that ruled in Eros’s favour against 14 Reels Entertainment Private Limited. Although Eros is entitled to about ₹28 crore under the award, the company states that it has not been paid and that enforcement has not been successful despite several attempts.
Eros informed the Court that 14 Reels Plus LLC, the subsidiary of 14 Reels Entertainment, was planning the release of Akhanda 2 to avoid the arbitral award. Eros claimed this was a roundabout way of avoiding payment of the dues, as per a report by Money Control.
After looking into the matter, the Court imposed a ban on the release, distribution, and commercial use of Akhanda 2 till the next hearing.
The order is equivalent to the complete halting of all release plans of Akhanda 2, whether in cinemas, online, or on satellite. The film has to wait for the Court to lift or alter the injunction to move ahead.
Until the dispute is resolved, Akhanda 2 is not getting a release.
