The actress Trisha Krishnan has sued the Tamil Nadu BJP State President Nainar Nagendran because he made statements linking her to the actor who became a politician Thalapathy Vijay. The incident has created a political crisis which highlights the presence of sexism in public discussions.
Nagendran used a recent media event to attack Vijay’s political goals by saying the actor should leave Trisha’s residence to learn about actual political conditions. The public and opposition parties reacted immediately to the comment which many people considered to be both sexist and intrusive.
Trisha, through her legal counsel Nithyaesh Natraj, released an official statement condemning the remarks. The statement read, “My client wishes to be defined only by her craft and not by any alleged political alignment. Further and most importantly, it is common saying that personal lives should never be made the subject of public commentary or discourse, and it is expected that persons holding high positions maintain responsibility and equanimity in public discourse,” per India Today.
Posting the legal notice on social media, Trisha added, “Disrespect should and always will be called out,” underscoring her call for respect and privacy. The statement further urged politicians to exercise “responsibility and equanimity,” and to refrain from making personal lives a subject of public debate.
Leaders from the DMK and Congress condemned Nagendran’s comments as “uncivilised” and “sexist.” While Nagendran initially stood by his statement, he later claimed he did not intend to offend anyone, as some BJP leaders attempted to downplay the controversy.
