Suicide Squad is coming back again, this time with some familiar faces and new faces as well! However, fans were sad to know that Will Smith won’t be returning for the second movie. The DC extended universe has gone through quite a few changes since the first wave of movies didn’t do as well as they expected.

DCEU had started with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel back in 2013. The movie set the tone for the other movies to come. It had a darker approach to the DC comic character. After the epic battle between Clack Kent and Bruce Wayne in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Just, DCEU introduced Suicide Squad, the team of anti-heroes.

Suicide Squad was built with a bunch of supervillains who were recruited by Amanda Waller Davis who is the director of the government organization ARGUS in exchange for a shorter sentence. The group included Deadshot, Harley Quin, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo, Killer Croc, and Slipknot.

The movie wasn’t quite well received by the critics. However, the sequel still managed to get the green light! James Gun was hired to write and direct the sequel. It is set in the same universe with an updated tone and new characters. However, this new movie didn’t seem to need Deadshot since it’s taking a different direction.

Turns out, Smith could not return for the sequel because of conflicting schedules. The Suicide Squad filming took place in 2019 during which the actor was busy elsewhere.

The movie’s producer, Peter Safran stated, “We discussed it. But I think the Will [Smith] of it all was really more of a schedule thing than anything else. We knew we had to start shooting in September [2019] because, frankly, we knew probably earlier than other people did that James was going to come back and do Guardians. So it was really important that we started shooting when we started shooting and Will wasn’t available, and that kind of made it easier all around. What are you going to do? He’s not available. So it’s also nice to, frankly, help separate it from the first movie, I think, is a great fashion.”
