Beyoncé, or Beyoncé Giselle Knowles, is an American singer-songwriter and actress born in Houston, Texas, on September 4, 1981. She first rose to prominence in the late 1990s as the lead singer of the R&B group Destiny’s Child before launching a tremendously successful solo career.

Beyoncé and her childhood pals founded Destiny’s Child, a singing and rapping girl group, in 1990 when she was nine. The band was eliminated from the Star Search television talent competition in 1992, and three years later, before an album had even been published, it was released from a recording deal. With a recording deal with Columbia in 1997 and a self-titled debut album that produced the hit single “No, No, No Part 2,” Destiny Child’s fortunes began to turn around. The Writing’s on the Wall, their second album was released in 1999 and sold more than eight million copies in the US while winning the group’s two Grammy Awards. The band’s third album, Survivor (2001), peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Beyoncé, who wrote successful songs for Destiny’s Child like the sassy “Bootylicious,” was undoubtedly the group’s leader. The group eventually dispersed to work on various projects. Beyoncé created her first solo album, Dangerously in Love, using her songwriting skills (2003). The album received acclaim upon release and quickly rose to the top of the charts worldwide, largely thanks to the upbeat hit “Crazy in Love,” which featured rapper Jay-Z. Beyoncé received five Grammy Awards in 2004, including the best female R&B vocal performance and the best contemporary R&B album.

2004 saw the reunion of Destiny’s Child to record Destiny Fulfilled. Although usually not as well received as the band’s earlier works, the album sold more than seven million copies globally and produced several hit singles. In 2005, the trio set out on a globe tour, during which they officially announced that they were breaking up. In the same year, they published #1’s, a compilation of well-known songs and number one singles.
