Since the century, the percentage of Indian female athletes competing on the international scene has increased dramatically.

Karnam Malleswari, the famed Indian weightlifter, won bronze in Sydney 2000, making her the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal.

Karnam Malleswari made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal.

Mary Kom

In many aspects, MC Mary Kom, the first Indian woman boxer to win an Olympic medal, has been a pathfinder for Indian sportswomen.

This icon is everything an ambitious Indian woman athlete hopes for in a role model, whether it’s her six world titles or her comeback to the ring after a pregnancy.

Despite her accomplishments, Mary Kom was not immune to the stereotype that boxing is a man’s sport. The Indian legend, on the other hand, chose to respond to her criticisms in the best way she knew how.

“People used to say that boxing was only for males, but I decided to prove them wrong one day. I made a vow to myself and kept it.”

Six World Boxing Championship golds are a record for the flyweight.

Mary Kom won her first match in her final Olympic appearance at Tokyo 2020, but lost in the round of 16 to fellow Olympic bronze medalist Ingrit Victoria.

Her nickname, ‘Magnificent Mary,’ is a fitting tribute to her legendary status in the sport.

In the past, India has produced outstanding boxers in the men’s division, but the Manipur-born southpaw has topped all of their achievements. She continues to be a source of inspiration for the country and, in particular, for sportswomen in India.

Lovlina Borgohain

Borgohain became the third Indian boxer to earn a medal at the Olympics when she won bronze in Tokyo 2020. The Olympic gold ambitions of the Assamese athlete were dashed in the semi-finals of the women’s welterweight event, where she was defeated by world No. 1 Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey. Both losing semi-finalists in boxing receive bronze medals. The quarter-finals against former world champion and fourth seed Chen Nien-Chin, which the Indian beat 4-1, was the highlight of Lovlina’s Games. Lovlina had an 0-4 record versus Nien-Chin until surprising the Taiwanese boxer with her aggressive style. She’s also a two-time World Championship bronze medalist.
