Abhishek Malik talks about battling widow stigma in society, career progress, web series and more…

Abhishek Malik is quite happy with the progress of his & TV show Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi.

He shares, “At first I was disappointed with the ratings as I felt that the amount of publicity the channel normally does for it shows was not to be seen.  But luckily over time we have gained love and support of the audiences as seen through social media interactions.”

Abhishek, who first debuted with Chhal-Sheh Aur Maat and has gone on to do shows like Kaisi Yeh Yaariyan and Bhagyalaxmi, feels that what has worked is the unique story, “I play a yuppie character (Ranveer) who falls in love with a widow who has a child. Our story is a lesson to orthodox thinking crowd that a widow should not be given a second chance at love.  Sadly, there are many such people in smaller towns and cities who still think like that. On the positive side, India is changing for when we went to promotions in hinterland India; we got a lot of love and support for experimenting with a bold social con.  I always make it point during the interaction to emphasize that we should not discard such women rather accept them as we do others  as they too are human.”

Personally as well Abhishek would not mind marrying a widow if he ever were to fall in love with one. “My family will support me the whole hog.”

Abhishek as an actor is very dedicated to his job although he suffers from vertigo; he did a scene on the terrace of his very windy Malad set. “There were no harness, the director stood by me as he trusted me but the producers were scared and had kept a car on standby, luckily everything went by fine.”

Looking ahead Abhishek is toying with the idea of doing a horror web series with  Nivedita Basu producer of Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi.  (House of Originals).
