Sunidhi Chauhan, an Indian playback singer, was born on August 14, 1983. She was born in Delhi, started performing in community events at the age of four, and had her singing debut in the movie Shastra at the age of 12. She became well-known throughout the year after recording “Ruki Ruki Si Zindagi” from Mast and taking home the first place prize on the singing reality show Meri Awaz Suno. It garnered her a nomination for Best Female Playback Singer and earned her the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent.

Her second big break came in 2000 with the release of the Fiza song “Mehboob Mere,” for which she also garnered a Filmfare nomination. She played item songs largely throughout her career and was dubbed the “queen of item songs” by the media. With the song “Dhoom Machale” from Dhoom, Chauhan received her third Filmfare nomination. The following year, Parineeta and Dus’ “Kaisi Paheli” and “Deedar De” earned Chauhan two additional nominations. Chauhan has a high octave vocal range with the flexibility to transition to lower octaves and drop notes. She was classified as a soprano by The Indian Express, which also criticized her “high-pitched non-falsetto voice” for the “squeakiness it gets while belting out those notes.” When Lata Mangeshkar compared Chauhan’s vocals to those of her contemporaries, she noted that her voice did not fit Lori’s musical style.

Pop, hip-hop, and R&B are all present in Chauhan’s music. Although she has also delivered slow melodic songs, her name has generally been associated with item songs. She has claimed that performing item songs makes her listeners feel more at ease, adding that she “established her name because of that genre.” When Chauhan sang the love ballad “Meri Zindagi Mein” for Anu Malik, followed by songs from Chameli and Fanaa, the stereotype that she mainly sang item songs was “shattered.”
