The MTV Video Music Awards have an unusually strict dress code. It’s not the right time to don A Serious Gown, as one might at the Venice Film Festival. Celebrities, on the other hand, prefer camp and shock value, stretching the boundaries of what fashion signifies to them. The whimsical red carpet has hosted some of the most unforgettable style performances of all time, from Madonna’s now-legendary white bustier debut in 1984 to Lil Kim’s similarly famous jumpsuit-and-pasty combo. Celebrities are keeping their cheeky streak going for the 2021 VMAs. The stars who topped the best-dressed list out of all the key looks we saw this evening are listed below.

Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X has been synonymous with winning, and the VMAs were no exception. In a lavender set with a train big enough just to hold all of his combined VMA nominations, he grasped the assignment as usual.

Ciara

Ciara’s appearance is on the tamer side relative to her fellow showgoers, despite the fact that her dress is fully sheer. Regardless, it’s our favorite all-black ensemble of the evening.

Olivia Rodrigo

We anticipated Olivia Rodrigo’s red carpet style to reflect her pop-punk flair, but we were delightfully pleased by this tailored gown. The colors, in particular, remind us of Bianca Stratford’s prom ensemble. As per Elle.

Normani

Because the VMAs include an innovative red carpet, it’s the ideal time to spotlight a new designer. Normani did just that in Patrycja Pagas, and we can hope to see a lot more of this designer in the coming years, thanks to the “Motivation” singer.

Megan Fox

There are some naked dresses and some “naked dresses” Megan Fox chose the second, but did Machine Gun Kelly go above and beyond? We can’t decide, so the duo completes our list of best-dressed celebrities of the night.
