With the color purple, BTS fans are spreading love all over the internet. On Friday, the K-pop group’s army of fans, known as the BTS ARMY, flooded social media with the message, “I purple you,” in honor of the 1,000 days since a member of the group first said it to them. Kim Taehyung, one of the seven-man band’s singers, invented the term during the group’s third Muster—a fan club event—in November 2016. Taehyung addressed supporters before the end of their performance, “I purple you,” as the lighting sent beams of purple light over the audience.
Taehyung, often known as V, noted that the color purple represents love. “Do you know what the color purple means? Purple is the rainbow’s last hue. Purple signifies I will trust and love you for a long time, he explained.
The audience erupted in delight in reaction to Taehyung’s comment, while his BTS bandmates were perplexed as to how he managed to conjure up such an evocative meaning for the colorful hue off the top of his head.
“Like the meaning of purple, I hope I could see you for a long time,” Taehyung concluded. “We will always believe you and accompany you up the steps. You don’t have to assist us all the time. You are welcome to keep our hands and follow us now. We’ll go up really high. I’ll make it nice.”
Fans have used the color purple to symbolize their admiration and affection for BTS since Taehyung created the word.
The purple wave has served the band well, as their passionate followers have helped the group achieve massive success. With the release of their sixth extended play album Map of the Soul: Persona in April, BTS became the first Korean pop band to have three No. 1 albums on Billboard’s 200 lists.
They’ve since gone on to shatter even more records with the publication of their third concert film, Bring the Soul: The Movie, which was distributed in 110 countries on Wednesday, making it the group’s broadest film release ever.
