One is only entitled to the title of a fashionista, in our opinion, if they refuse to follow trends and only wear what they like. According to creative Karla Welch, Justin Bieber’s 2021 collection was all about embracing streetwear and flirting with unconventional proportions and fits. In other instances, he’s sported additional slacks, a look that has sparked debate.
Of course, Bieber has always been stylish. He’s experimented with western wear, skating chic, and traditional suits. But he seems to have fulfilled his potential this year, merging all of these elements into a clean, cohesive design. Consider the oversized jacket, black hoodie, and light-wash trousers he wore to accept the MTV Video Music Awards’ Best Pop award—it’s the perfect mix of all three!
What we admire the most about Bieber’s fashion year is that he never takes himself too seriously. This is a man who wore a turtleneck, slacks, and a bucket hat to the premiere of his documentary, Justin Bieber: Our World! He often wore tacky gummy bear charm bracelets with his clothes. His ensembles are usually sprinkled with a sense of whimsy and pleasure, which is exactly what we think dressing should be about—having a good time and not caring what others think of your final look. Going into the new year, I’m going to try to emulate that style of enthusiasm.
