Diets are unfortunately fairly frequent among K-Pop idols, and several have recounted stories of severely restricting their diets. The aesthetic standards that idols are supposed to meet are incredibly high, which can generate a lot of stress for people who don’t think they match the bill. Here are some K-Pop celebrities who have gone on severe diets that we would never suggest to anyone.

BTS Jimin

Although Jimin isn’t the only member of BTS who has struggled with weight and dieting, it appears that he went on the most rigorous diet in the group. In 2018, he revealed that he had lost a significant amount of weight as a result of over-exercising and a risky diet. During the “Blood Sweat & Tears” era, the other members were concerned about Jimin’s safety because he would pass out during practice.

IU

Not only did IU reveal the deadly diet she followed at one point in her life, but it also inspired YouTubers and others to try to emulate it. When a member of the audience at her solo debut stage in 2008, when she was just 15 years old, mind you dubbed her a pig, the talented idol was understandably wounded, and she began an extreme diet as a result. She revealed what she ate during this time on Night of TV Entertainment in 2013. The diet’s moniker, “MyProAna,” seems to imply that it’s popular in anorexia-promoting communities. Breakfast consists of an apple, lunch consists of one or two sweet potatoes, and dinner consists of a protein drink.

Twice Momo

Pictures and videos of Momo before her debut make it difficult to imagine she was ever expected to go on a diet, but she did, and it was one of the most rigorous diets in the industry. JYP Entertainment advised her she needed to lose 15 pounds before her debut… In less than a week. There is no healthy way to shed 15 pounds in so short of a period of time, and expecting anyone to do so is ludicrous. Momo not only ate nothing but ice cubes for the entire week, but she also went to the gym every day. At one point, she even stated that she was afraid for her life. She was also dehydrated and having problems sleeping since she was afraid she wouldn’t wake up.

Extreme diets like those followed by certain K-Pop stars should never be imitated by anyone, and there are far safer and more sustainable ways to live a healthy lifestyle!
