Indian reality shows surely add the necessary spice and drama to everyday television viewing. The relationship between reality TV and its audience is unique compared to those of other genres. This sense of reality that is often edited to seem melodramatic is entertaining because people get to see a life drastically different from their own.

Over the years, the television industry has introduced many top reality shows to the Indian audience. Many of them are inspired by foreign reality shows. Reality TV shows provide a good break from the ‘saas-bahu’ daily soaps. However, the events in the reality shows are overhyped to attract viewership. Over the past few years, it has been observed that Indian reality TV shows have reduced themselves to sob stories, romantic angles, and on-stage rivalries.

In recent years, reality TV viewership has been declining rapidly. Reality TV used to be known for providing entertainment through drama, but now it is becoming predictable. Also, with a number of seasons coming back to back, it has often tended to become uninteresting instead of entertaining.

We all remember the first Indian Idol winner Abhijeet Sawant, the first Dance India Dance winner Salman Yusuff Khan, first Bigg Boss winner Rahul Roy but do we remember the later seasons’ winners? Well, it has become monotonous to witness the same shows again and again.

Although these shows provide a platform to showcase talent, sometimes they just play on drama to attract viewership. And when one show gets the hit formula, other competition shows such as singing, dancing, and talent shows follow the same path as every other reality TV show mentioned.

As millennials, we tend to reminisce about the golden days of the early 2000’s when things were simple; more authentic, less digital. The world of reality TV is in serious need of innovation, and we see an integral part of TV becoming more diluted and repetitive and is suffering as a result.
