On Tuesday, as the death toll from months of downpours increased to 1,559, Hollywood actress and UN humanitarian Angelina Jolie made a surprise trip to one of the most flood-hit areas in southern Pakistan, according to officials. In southern Sindh province’s city of Karachi, where floods since mid-June have killed 692 people, damaged hundreds of thousands of homes, and rendered half a million homeless, Jolie was seen in television footage arriving at an airport.

According to local media, she later visited some of the flood-affected districts. According to the IRC, a well-known international charity organization, Jolie is in Pakistan to assist the communities impacted by the terrible floods. However, the authorities made no remark regarding Jolie’s visit to Dadu, one of the worst-affected districts where waterborne illnesses have also contributed to roughly 300 fatalities since July.

Doctors are currently working to stop the spread of waterborne illnesses among flood survivors. Shahbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, is in New York for the 77th meeting of the UN General Assembly when the visit takes place. In his remarks, Sharif will draw attention to the harm done by floods brought on by climate change in the developing nation.
