The best summer tunes to get you in the mood are missing from your packing list, but beach days are just around the corner.

The fact is, you can make beach tunes sound whichever you want. Although steel drums and ukuleles may be the first to come to mind, other sounds can also make you think of a wonderful day at the beach. Synth sounds, gospel piano, timeless ’80s tunes, and even EDM beats may be the driving force behind summertime songs. The words of a beach song can also vary; they might be carefree, dance-y, melancholic, or just plain catchy. The ideal soundtrack will turn a summer vacation from a fast weekend break into a place you can call home for the rest of your life, whether you’re spending it with your significant other, a group of friends, or by yourself.

Katy Perry’s “Smile”

Katy, it’s been a while since I’ve been able to go outside and enjoy the sunshine. I’m glad you understand.

The line, “Had a piece of humble pie / That ego check saved my life,” is one of my favourites.

Beyoncé’s song “Hold Up”

In fact, Beyoncé striding and glistening in a flowing golden sundress is the epitome of the summer attitude.

The line “Never had the baddest woman in the game up in your covers” is one of my favourites.

Rihanna’s “If It’s Lovin’ That You Want”

This Rihanna flashback, which has reggae overtones and a music video with an island theme, is ideal for a beach vacation.

Favorite line: “My love is sincere, therefore I won’t push too hard or break your heart.”
