If you listen to Taylor Swift’s new song “Bad Blood” without knowing the context, you’ll probably believe it’s about a romance gone bad, which is something Swift usually writes about. Yes, but there’s a twist this time: it’s about a female frenemy, not an ex-boyfriend.

“Bad Blood” was hyped as the most potentially explosive tune during Swift’s normally superb PR campaign for her new album “1989,” which was released Monday. Swift is known for naming her foes in her lyrics without stating their names, instead of relying on hints. And this one got a lot of attention since it seemed to be about fellow A-lister Katy Perry.

In a Rolling Stone interview, Swift aided fans in deciphering this one: Swift told the magazine, “I was never sure if we were friends or not for years,” indicating the song was about another female performer. “At award presentations, she’d come up to me and say something before walking away, and I’d wonder, ‘Are we friends, or did she just deliver me the harshest insult of my life?'”

Swift explained that the song was inspired by the fact that she “essentially attempted to wreck a full arena tour.” That’s an obvious hint: last summer, some of Swift’s backup dancers unexpectedly departed her “Red” tour to join Perry’s “Prism” tour. With Perry dating Swift’s ex-boyfriend John Mayer, as well as Perry’s ambiguous post suggesting serious ish with another girl, the blogosphere was eagerly anticipating a showdown between the two celebrities.
