Without question, BLACKPINK is the most popular girl group on the planet. Jennie, Jisoo, Rosé, and Lisa, a four-woman powerhouse from South Korea, debuted in 2016 under YG Entertainment, bursting onto the K-pop scene with a set of singles that catapulted them to the forefront of the “girl crush” concept in the K-pop landscape, encapsulating confidence, sexiness, and inspirational assurance. They’ve shattered YouTube records, embarked on international tours, secured coveted Billboard chart slots, and became the first K-pop girl group to perform at Coachella since their debut.

“Lovesick Girls” is a bubbly melody that serves as the appropriate lead single for Blackpink’s debut full-length album. It’s both fresh and nostalgic, harkening back to bygone pop eras with acoustic and electronic elements, as well as a synth sound during Lisa and Jennie’s rap verse, which gives the song an early 2010s pop feel. It achieves a level of maturity and depth that BLACKPINK hasn’t always achieved in its past big tracks, as evidenced by Rosé and Jisoo’s joint bridge.

BLACKPINK are at their poppiest in “As If It’s Your Last,” and it’s glorious. The song was produced as a standalone single during the summer of 2017, was the group’s only release that year, yet it was a hit. Its chorus is one of BLACKPINK’s most remembered throughout their entire discography. Finally, “As If It’s Your Last” encompasses the best aspects of the band’s style, from the EDM elements that pervade most of their work to the members’ charisma and vocal abilities.

“Whistle” outperforms “Boombayah” by a wide margin. It’s cool and confident from Jisoo’s opening “Hey boy,” stitched together with a whistle hook and minimal production components that let the bandmates’ vocals shine through. The ebb and flow of “Whistle” builds to a final chorus that will undoubtedly get you psyched up, but it’s comfortable confidence, especially in comparison to “Boombayah,” that makes it excellent.
