Tennis has long had a strong partnership with fashion. Consider the recent US Open, where tennis officials, ballboys, and ballgirls all wore Ralph Lauren apparel. Tennis-inspired outfits have also appeared in the runway designs of a slew of fashion houses and designers, including Michael Kors, Brooks Brothers, Thom Browne, and a slew of others. Tennis champions like Serena and Venus Williams, for example, strive to push the boundaries of what can be worn on the court.

It’s no surprise, then, that a slew of tennis stars attended the Costume Institute’s Met Ball, which was hosted by Anna Wintour. Anyone who watches the tournament or reads Vogue knows Wintour is a tennis fanatic. She routinely highlights tennis players on the cover and pages of her magazine and has welcomed a number of them (including Roger Federer, Serena Williams, and Maria Sharapova) to sit in the front row with her at fashion presentations. It was a great formula for style and tennis, especially with four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka serving as co-chair of this year’s Met Gala event.
