Indian Premier League was all set to begin its 13th season on 29th March 2020. However, according to recent reports, it is postponed to 15th April 2020. The novel Covid-19 has turned into a pandemic and has spread over to 90 countries. In a media release, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said that it is concerned and sensitive about all its stakeholders, public health in general and it is taking all necessary steps to ensure that all people related to IPL including fans have a safe cricketing experience. The IPL will be played behind closed doors, to empty stands. The order from the central sports ministry on the matter stands to prevent any mass gathering.
In such a scenario BCCI can do two things: change the format of the league to fit into a smaller window and conduct the league within 2 or 3 venues to curb the unnecessary travel. IPL cannot be played without foreign players. Currently, the visas are under the process of being rejected for safety concerns. All in all IPL 2020 is happening but BCCI and Indian Health Ministry are taking the necessary measures to make it safe and exciting at the same time.
We hope things get in order soon and we have a pleasant and fun IPL 2020.
