Sourav Chandidas Ganguly, affectionately known as Dada, is an Indian former cricketer, commentator and administrator who played as a left-handed opening batsman and was captain of the Indian national team. He is the face who turned around Indian Cricket Team into a World-beater. Sourav Ganguly possessed a natural knack for leadership which is why he is considered one of the most successful captains in cricket. He was responsible for instilling ambition into a somewhat unfocused team when he took over the captaincy in 2000. Ganguly’s batting style was equally superb and he is the only cricketer to secure four consecutive Man of the Match awards in One Day International matches.
A few instances about his wit and his fearlessness make him the most loved player apart from being an exceptional cricketer. Mischief and Dada are almost synonymous, thanks to his actions on and off the field. Like the time when he trolled Ricky Ponting during the toss by calling ‘head-tail’, and actually got away with it. Also, he made sure, that he was by his players’ side and that he brings out the best in them. The biggest example of this is Virender Sehwag. It was Dada’s idea to make him open for India. It’s endearing to see how sometimes he had too much encouragement to give. As Sachin Tendulkar recounts, once he got hit by a Shoaib Akhtar delivery on the ribs and Ganguly kept telling him, ‘tu champion hai re’.
Indeed he is the most loved player of his time and even now.
