Opinion: Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai: What made the show a path-breaking one

‘All Good Things Come To An End’. However, it was difficult to bid adieu to Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai.

Sony Entertainment Television gave us one of the best shows of Indian television, Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai. What makes the series stand out amongst others is that it is simple, realistic and nostalgic. The daily traverses through the golden era of the ’90s and revolves around Sameer and Naina’s love story, which is based on the real-life love story of its makers, Sumeet Mittal and Shashi Mittal. Although the project was popular amongst youngsters, it did not do good in the TRP game.

What made the show a path-breaking one? We’ll tell you here. ..

In today’s Tinder age, where physical attraction and physical relationships are shown under the pretext of love, the daily showcased a pure and innocent romance blossom. Sameer and Naina’s ways of communicating with each other during class or otherwise is romance personified. It’s a heart to heart connection with nothing even remotely physical. In fact, even after Naina (Ashi Singh) is madly in love with Sameer (Randeep Rai), she slaps the guy for just touching her hand without her permission. Not only that, but this love story also shows selfless affection, in which both leads are willing to go to any length for their significant other. From the costumes and the sets to the background music, everything will remind you of the ’90s. The setting of the early 90s from the interior of the house to the streets, the shops to the school, everything recreated the magic of the early 90s.

To connect more and be realistic, the makers also played songs from the ’80s and the ’90s like Maine Pyaar Kiya, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, DDLJ, and a couple of more. Be it comical songs or romantic or sad songs, these songs that define the 90s are perfectly chosen for the situation. They are also a respite from the new age, overrated and sometimes vulgar songs.

Indian TV soaps are being criticized because of the over-the-top acting and overreactions. Also, we don’t see any of the ‘she falls for no reason and he catches her and they have an eye lock for the entire episode’ or ‘she slapped him once but it’s shown like 10 times’ or any of those typical Indian serial moments. But the actors of Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai have done a tremendously wonderful job in expressing their emotions, dialogue delivery and have allowed us to connect with and relate to them. Be it comic timing or heart-wrenchingly emotional scenes, they’ve managed to perfect them all.

Lastly, Ashi Singh and Randeep Rai are pretty believable as 90s teenagers. The two being newbies, managed to win audiences’ hearts with their innocence and performances. Now, Ashi and Randeep are listed in the television top actors.

And for all these reasons and more, YUDKBH is one of the best shows to ever have been made.
